SS Laurentic History
SS Laurentic was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast and was launched on 29th April 1909.
A few months later, the same Belfast workers began construction on her famous cousin, Titanic.
In 1917, SS Laurentic was carrying forty-three tons of gold bullion from Great Britain to Canada.
On 25th January 1917 SS Laurentic struck a mine just off Malin Head, Co Donegal and sank within an hour
in 40 metres of water. Not only was there a huge loss of life but all the gold bullion was lost with the wreck.
An incredible salvage feat between 1917 and 1924 recovered 3186 gold bars of the missing 3211 with a
further five being recovered in 1932 by another salvage operation. This leaves 20 gold bars, worth some £10 million
in todays money, still unaccounted for. See www.laurentic.com

HMS Audacious History
Consistently described as one of the best dive experiences, the HMS Audacious lies
17 miles north-east of Tory Island, Co Donegal.
Resting upside-down in 65m, this battleship was sunk in 1916 when she struck a mine in wartime waters.
Despite the fact that she was reported to have been struck by four German U-Boat torpedoes there was no loss of lives.
A dive trip to the Audacious is one of the highlights of the Donegal wreck diving scene
and attracts diver from all over Europe.
Measuring 600 feet, a bottom time of 30 minutes will comfortably guarantee sightings of guns,
shells and launchers. From my experience I recommend exploring the Audacious in two dives as follows:
|
|
Dive One would take in the four large propellers and rudders.
Dive Two will have you in awe of the two mother guns and huge turret with visibility typically in excess of 25 meters.
