"Undertaking technical training is not just a question of learning skills, it's more about learning an attitude and approach. You certainly need an instructor who can teach the skills, but that's not enough without instilling the right mindset. "After competing the DSAT TEC 40 course with Declan I could not recommend him higher as an instructor. The course was one of the most challenging things I have ever done. I think doing it in the more challenging cold water environment of the Atlantic Ocean was a great decision instead of going to a warm water location. It gave us the confidence and the perpetration to carry out shut downs and other skills in the gear configuration and conditions that we do most of our dives in.
The one thing about Declan as an instructor that really stood out to me was his integrity and his professionalism. Working in an industry where some instructors could be accused of fast tracking students through their courses and sighing them off before they are ready due to economic reasons, Declan could not have been more of the opposite. If the skill was not performed to not only the course requirements but to Declan's satisfaction it was repeated and repeated until it became second nature and if necessary we would do another dive to re-complete the skills. If we completed the skills for that dive without any hesitation Declan would then throw new simulated complications and watch how we dealt with them.
